Subsidies, India is seeking the support of the African group of nations in the Doha Round negotiations, and calls for the implementation of the cotton agreement announced 5 years ago, which is the latest roadblock in the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations.

Although the four countries of cotton (Burkina Faso, Benin, Chad and Mali) publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the western countries' disregard of the 2005 Ministerial Conference in Hongkong on Monday, India's negotiators in New Delhi worry that US lobbyists will soon persuade them to compromise.

An official of the Ministry of Commerce, who asked not to be named, said the problem is that we do not rely heavily on cotton.

But cotton industry is very important.

If the four countries are bought by the United States, then we will be in a difficult situation.

Like many developing countries, the representative of India said that if the cotton trade rules established in 2005 were not implemented, the Doha trade agreement could not be reached.

The 2005 agreement announced that the developed countries would eliminate all forms of cotton export subsidies in 2006 and provide duty-free and quota free access to cotton exports to the least developed countries, including domestic subsidies.

DK Nair, Secretary General of the India Textile Industry Federation, said, however, that the plan is flawed, that is, cotton export subsidies account for about 10% of the world's cotton subsidies, and the rest are domestic.
