Ferrofluid was first invented by NASA. The so-called ferrofluid, as its name suggests, is a magnetic reaction liquid.

Because it can be made of fuel and tiny magnetic particles, it is very suitable for use in engines without gravity, so that only by applying a simple magnetic field, the fuel can be traced to the specified direction by magnetic force, thus solving the problem of fuel flow in the engine in weightlessness environment.

Recently, Nike has also made an article on this very sophisticated material which looks very tall. It has made an amazing sales promotion for its latest KevinDurant series sneakers.

In fact, the production of ordinary ferrofluid is very simple. You only need to make nanometer magnetism.

Material Science

The suspension is supported by the incorporation of particles into the carrier fluid.

The magnetic material particles are coated with a compound that prevents them from lumping unless exposed to a strong magnetic field.

When the material meets magnets, it will exhibit corresponding magnetism and coalesce, or even follow the magnet to move.

But this effect is only temporary. As long as the magnetic field dissipates, the material will also lose magnetism and return to its stationary liquid state.

Nike's exhibition was conducted by a self proclaimed Guild.

Design

Studio completed.

They placed a simple dark black sneaker on a seemingly unattractive metal showcase and showed how the dark ferromagnetic fluid reacted to the movement of the external magnet.

It must be recognized that this is a cool way to attract people to talk about a super expensive sneaker.

Watching ferrofluid moving up and down on the surface of a sneaker like a wave is still very visual, and it will undoubtedly attract many people to take videos and share them on social media. Obviously, this is the purpose of Nike, which is to spread virus through social media.

It needs to be explained that the shoe that the ferrofluid crawled on is actually a replica of 3D printed KevinDurant sports shoes.

In detail, you can see every lace, seam and crease on it. At first glance, you may not see that it is duplicated.

The reason why we need to use 3D printing shoes is to install a strong magnet inside to control the movement of ferrofluid.

The principle is this: the Guild team put the 3D printed plastic shoes on the top of the trough with a black magnetic fluid material. The plastic shoe was hollow, with two powerful neodymium magnets inside, and the two magnets could move back and forth inside the track of the shoe, so that they could pull ferrofluid from the slot and produce some amazing geometric shapes.

When the magnet moves, the liquid rolls up and down on the surface of the beautiful shoes, forming seemingly impossible peaks and anti gravity ripples.

This is visually powerful. It looks almost like a strange creature trying to eat shoes.
